ESRI was founded as Environmental Systems Research Institute in 1969. 2006 revenues were $660 million with users in over 220 countries. ESRI is the world’s largest (over 60% market share) supplier of computerized mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). ESRI is the “Microsoft” of the GIS world. ESRI has over 2,500 employees most of which are technical positions. ESRI is a privately held organization with no debt or venture capital funding.

In the mid-nineties Sears and Roebucks contracted ESRI to create a routing and scheduling program to direct their delivery and service technicians.
